Game design

I have been trying to design my own tabletop skirmish wargame rules for years now, but have never finished them to my satisfaction.  Just lately a combination of dice and rules mechanics from other games all seemed to come together.  There is nothing original in my rules, they just borrow what I consider the best bits from existing systems, some wargames and some board games.

The earlist inspiration was MB Games Heroquest.  I loved the simplicity and the dice mechanics - no factors to count, just symbols on the dice.  Another major source was Bryan Ansells The Rules With No Name wild west skirmish game  They used normal dice but only 6 counted and again no factors.  only the quantity of dice mattered.

A couple of board games provided further inspiration - Gears of War and Mice and Mystics.

The rules were not intended to be a table top simulation of combat but simply to give a fast fun game, mostly to resolve combats in a roleplay game and also to provide a simple framework to teach wargaming to my son.  They use a hex based game board (Hexon by Kallistra), card activation and dice with symbols - block dice, available from The Dice Shop in various colours,

Feel free to download them for your own amusement.
